The 2009 Breeders' Cup will repeat
last years schedule, that will have a total of 14
races spread over two days of racing with $25.5
million in purse money on the line. Friday November
6th will have six races with the Marathon first then
all the distaff divisions, headlined by the Grade 1
Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (formerly the Breeders'
Cup Distaff) worth $2 million. Saturday November 7th
will have eight races headlined by the $5 million
Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles. The
Marathon, which was lengthened this year to 1 3/4
miles, was moved from Saturday to Friday to allow
for an all Breeders' Cup Pick Six on both days.

This will be the second consecutive
year that Santa Anita will host the Breeders' Cup on a
synthetic surface. The Arcadia track
installed an all-weather surface, which replaces
its dirt track, last summer. The synthetic track should
be popular with European trainers, which could lead
to more participation.
Santa Anita Park for our 26th Breeders’ Cup World
Championships. The Breeders Cup has previously been
held at Santa Anita in 1986, 1993 and 2003 and
2008. Santa
Anita is one of the world’s great racing venues, an
outstanding
facility with a great tradition that will showcase
top flight international racing for our fans.
This will be the seventh time the Breeders' Cup has
been held in Southern California. Hollywood Park
hosted the inaugural Breeders' Cup in 1984 and again
in 1987 and 1997.
This will be the
first Breeders’ Cup to be conducted over two days.
Friday’s program will debut three new $1 million
Breeders’ Cup races. The Championships will conclude
on Saturday with eight Breeders Cup
races.

season, and showcases the all-stars of the Sport of
